Drums of Fire

“The “Sheltered Passions” series resembles what a space alien's documentary might be if their version of a Norman Rockwell visited Earth.”
“Drums of Fire,” from the “Sheltered Passions” portfolio by Richard S. McWherter.
Many high schools with football teams hold a rally during Homecoming week, often one or more nights before the game. The events vary, but may include a parade, assemblies, skits, games, and the introduction of the homecoming court. At some schools, the Homecoming parade ends with the school's band leading the students, cheerleaders and all the team's supporters to a bonfire ceremony. The fire is made of old wood structures or scrapes and can include the rival school's memorabilia. These are then consumed in a controlled “bone fire” analogy to visualize a victory over the opposing team.
Sheltered Passions is a pictorial collection of black and white photographs of American rituals. In this theme, rituals are defined as any solemn practice or custom, religious or otherwise. These are the things that people do that utilize significant amounts of their time, resources, personal sacrifices, and money, yet are considered inspiring or worthy by the participants, even if they remain intangible in the moment. And whether it is a lottery line or a communion line (both secular and sacred), these rituals are our “beliefs in action” that reflect our common, and unifying, sheltered passions.
